Close shave

An accident or incident that almost happens but does not happen. I had a close shave when I almost missed my airplane flight.

To remove the contents of something, to take something away. The parks department began to clear away the old trees in the field.

Chip in

To contribute to something, to pay jointly for something. We chipped in and bought our father a birthday present.

Clear sailing

To be an easy situation. It was clear sailing after we finished work and began our holiday.

Clear (someone’s) name

To prove that someone is not guilty of something. The man tried very hard to clear his name regarding his past criminal activity.

Clear the table

To remove the dishes and eating utensils from a table. After we finished eating we cleared the table.

Claim a life

To take the life of someone. The accident on the freeway claimed the life of two people.

Call in (someone) or call (someone) in

To ask someone for help, to call for special advice. We called in a doctor to look at the patient.
