The proper study of mankind is man

Taken from the poet Alexander Pope’s Essay on Man (1733), this proverb means that our thinking and study should be devoted primarily to understanding and improving the condition of man.

It is often also interpreted to mean that the best way to understand and improve the human condition is to focus on understanding and improving ourselves.
