Make the best of a bad job

Here ‘job’ does not refer to working, but to a state of affairs. To make the best of a bad job is to accept one’s present position with the equanimity, to put up with an unfavourable or uncomfortable state of affairs.

We ran out of petrol when we were miles from anywhere, and as it was gone midnight we had to make the best of a bad job and sleep in the car.’
