It has been said that experience is the best teacher, but that the school fees are high. This is another way of saying that although we certainly learn by experience, we may have to pay delay in suffering or hardship before we eventually reap the benefit. Only foolish people act in this way. Those with more intelligence are guided by that other proverb: Wise men learn by others men’s mistakes; fools by their own.
