Death silences a man for ever. If he knows something in his lifetime that others do not want made public, he cannot reveal their secret when he is dead, so they are safe. In a seventeenth-century play called Andronicus Commentius by John Wilson one of the characters says: ‘Twere best to knock them in the head … The dead do tell no tales.’
