Through hardship to the stars

Here ‘stars‘ is synonymous with fame or renown. It is a translation of the Latin proverb, Per aspera ad astra, and means that the road to fame is rough and difficult. An alternative version, Per aedua ad astra, which means the same thing, is the motto of the Royal Air Force and is rarely used in its English translation.
