Whoever gets his blow in first catches his adversary at a disadvantage. Here, for the sake of example, is a description of a football match:

‘The home team scored a goal within two minutes of the start of the game, which so discouraged the visitors that they lost all confidence in themselves and were soundly beaten by ten goals to nothing.’
