Spare the rod and spoil the child

It does not improve a child’s character if he is not punished when he has done wrong.

The source is Proverbs, xiii, 24. ‘He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.’ This appears in the Moffatt translation as : ‘He hates his son who fails to ply the rod : the man who loves his son chastises him.’
