It takes two to make a quarrel

A quarrel is an angry dispute between two persons. Tom cannot quarrel with himself ; nor can he quarrel with Dick if Dick does not wish to quarrel with him. Tom may lose his temper, but as long as Dick does not lose his, there can be no quarrel. The proverb is often used like this:

‘I’ll admit we both lost our tempers, but it wasn’t my fault. He started it.’

‘It takes two to make a quarrel.’
