We are all ready to do the other fellow’s job – or offer advice – when there is no risk attached, but we are not so eager to volunteer when danger threatens.

D’Arcy Wentworth Thompson, the English scholar, put this into verse:

When winds are steady and skies are clear,
Every hand the ship must steer:
But soon as ever the wild winds blow,
Every hand would go below.
