More haste, less speed

The greater our need for haste, the more likely we are to waste time instead of saving it.

‘Why does my shoelace always have to snap when I’m in a hurry?’

‘It snaps because you’re in hurry. You get so flustered that you pull too hard on it, which makes you later than ever. More haste, less speed.’

The Latin form of this proverb was the paradox Festina lente, which means ‘Hasten slowly.’
