He that cannot obey, cannot command

We must learn to obey orders before we are qualified to give them. The experience gained in a subordinate position is invaluable when we have to take charge. A leader must first learn how to follow and respect authority before they can be trusted to lead others and make important decisions.

The proverb is often associated with Benjamin Franklin, who included a similar quote in his publication, “Poor Richard’s Almanack.”
